1001 shopping bags

America, why do you ...
  • ... pack my groceries into 15 bags when the homo sapiens only has two hands?
  • ... put your air conditioning to a temperature that requires a jacket, making me leave the house EVERY time in long pants and come back all sweaty?
  • ... think it strange to encounter a dark haired Swiss?
  • ... put a bus schedule up when the public transport system is as reliable as Uganda's?
  • ... need 20 different kinds of milk?
  • ... call your meal sizes 'regular', 'large' and 'xtra large' ?
  • ... jog in the midday heat, and take your air conditioned car to get your groceries?
  • ... make a cheese and call it 'Swiss' ?
America, I love being here. Thank you for the smiling faces, thank you for the bus drivers who respond my 'Thank you''s, thank you for the richness of culture you offer, thank you for how quickly help is offered. Thank you for being different, thank you for stretching me.
I am looking forward to getting to know you.

Yeah sister! This country is still a wonderful mistery to me:
The country of selfish capitalism, where standing in the bus to let an elderly sit is a federal law;
The kingdom of the car, where the pedestrian is king at each crossing marks...
The 300 million-souls nation, where unexpected never seen friends are a Naan restaurant window away...
What can I say?...God Bless freak'n America! :)

hm..just lately i've been thinking about this blog entry where you mention that the bus drivers respond to your "Thank you's"...
the question that came up is: how do they respond: do they say

- you're welcome, or
- mention not, or
- yeah (seriously), or
- do they just say "ok"...

enjoy your stay... :D

I wonder why you're this concerned about the drivers' response :):) but they generally say "you're welcome" to whosoever thanks them while leaving.
There are those who say it almost automatically, but the majority is really nice, even wishing you a nice day... – I like it a lot.

ah sorry, forgot to mention this.. so the reason why i'm asking this question is:

some years ago my neighbors visited the states and one (amongst many many others of course) striking experience they told me about was the different responses they got to their "thank you"'s.
meaning: some just nodded, some looked puzzled, some just said "ok"... :)

at first when reading your entry i didn't notice..but some days later, all of a sudden, it crossed my mind ...

nothing special though :D
thanks for answering my weird question ;)

If confusing Switzerland and Sweden makes Americans ignorant, what does it make Europeans who do the same thing?

Michèle hat gesagt…

I'm not saying it makes them ignorant, I'm just saying it's quite amusing.. :)

But myself, I managed to have dinner with a blond boy and call him Swedish TWICE even though I should have known he's finnish :)
